The American cranberry, Vaccinium macrocarpon, is a North American crop. In the United States it grows in northern states: Wisconsin produces about 61% of the US crop and Massachusetts about 26%, with New Jersey, Oregon and Washington making up the rest. Harvest runs from mid-September to mid-November, and most bogs are wet-harvested: the bog is flooded, the berries are loosened and float to the surface because of air pockets inside each fruit (Cranberry Marketing Committee).
